How to Prevent Cyberbullying: From the Home to the Homeroom

The National Crime Prevention Council estimates that 43 percent of teens ages 13 to 18 have been victims of cyberbullying in the last year. That statistic translates to between 6.9 and 8.7 million American teens. If you add in pre-teens and tweens, the number almost doubles to 13 million.

But studies also show that not enough education is taking place at home or in schools. In fact, a key study released this month by the National Cybersecurity Alliance found that:

  • Only 8 percent of educators said their school included cyber security, cyber safety and cyber ethics topics as part of the state curriculum, health/safety curriculum or one-day assemblies.
  • Less than 5 percent of educators said protecting, identifying and responding to identity theft, predators, bullying and other crimes is included in the state curriculum.
  • Only 22 percent of teachers are comfortable teaching about cyberbullying, identity theft and other types of cyber crime, and only 23 percent feel prepared to teach students how to protect their personal information online.

To help parents, teachers and guardians better understand how to approach the topic of cyberbullying, Qwest has partnered with Mike Donlin, a senior program consultant for Seattle Public Schools who specializes in Internet safety and cyberbullying prevention.

Through a grant from the Qwest Foundation®, Donlin developed a first-of-its-kind standards-based cyberbullying prevention curriculum that was implemented in Seattle middle schools this fall. Donlin also authored a free downloadable guide for parents and educators who want to learn more about cyberbullying and implement cyberbullying prevention courses in their schools.
